Global Mamas enhances the international marketplace with unique, high quality, handmade apparel, and at the same time provides sustainable livelihoods for women and girls in Africa. The small balcony of Molly Dhan's apartment block is over-flowing with pink and purple fabric and is a hub of activity. Four sewing machines are whirring away, an apprentice is ironing finished dresses, while friends stop by on their way in and out of the building. Across the corridor from the balcony is Molly's two-room apartment. She shares the bedroom with Emi, the 17-year-old daughter of her cousin. Molly has taken on the responsibility of day-to-day care for Emi who is still at school. Emi's mother and the rest of Molly's family – her mother, brother and two sisters – all live in Winneba, a village about one and a half hours drive from Cape Coast. At 34, Molly is an experienced seamstress, employs three workers and is training up two more women. Everyone arrives for work around 8:00 am and, once Molly has handed out the duties for the day, the packed workshop starts to hum with sewing machines.
